Exhibitions Visited

BAILEY STARDUST

Tickets have arrived for Bailey's Stardust not until February 2014 but I love Bailey - my era, and one of my favourites because of that.

I attended the show and as you can see above, I couldn't resist this rather large colourful book.  Trying not to bash everyone on the tube on my return.  It was worth the struggle and although I don't really need another book, I don't think this is one I will regret, and Im sure I will be referring back to all the lovely portraits and stories.

The show ( as always ) was really busy, I'm always amazed at how many people like to go to these exhibitions.  I perused the room, and loved what I saw, I never tire of portraits for some reason.

The selection for the exhibition was made by David Bailey himself, he selected images over the decades which must have been an impossible task. He must have his favourites and some that he does like as much, but needed to make a selection of work that covered all areas.
I found it really interesting reading all the sections of the book, followed by the selected images. What a life he has had and still has at the age of 75, although apparently doesn't want too many adventurous  photoshoots and who can blame him. But it must be impossible to stop.. What a fabulous collection of characters, 50 years worth, Im Jealous.

David Bailey was probably the first photographer I was aware of growing up and it was my era of celebrities I suppose, I like the familiarity and memories, although I was young and these people and there stories were just on the surface.  I have strong recollection of when Bailey married Marie Helvin, (his third wife of four ) and then there was lots of talk of them and subsequent photos of her.  Because of this I have added her photo .. which is the last one at the bottom ..  The others I have selected from the book are David Bowie who just sums up this time, Jack Nicholson who I just love and he has such a great photograph face, craggy and always interesting, I would love to take Jack Nicholson's picture.
(apparently one of Baileys Fav's too ).

A comical shot of Charlie Watts on a donkey with his drums, a sense of naughtiness, not taking oneself too seriously.. a fun image, I did feel a sense of fun about the photographs, obviously not with all.
Bailey obviously had a connection with people and he photographed so many celebrities he must have lost count.

Jerry Hall had to be included, she was always on the TV, in the papers and modelling continually, always grabbing our attention.  Also Zandra Rhodes still full of zest, this was a 2012 photo. And Marie Helvin who we have spoken about.  This probably isn't my favourite picture of her, I'll have to investigate the story behind it.

I felt, at the show, that I had a feeling of envy, to have photographed so many famous people and produced such a large body of excellent work, I should think it was hard to beat. Such wonderful characters,  I wonder how many he left out ... on the cutting room floor ... that could probably be another show !!
